The Nigerian Dream
By Egwoli Samuel
It is too bad for our image as a sovereign entity to have to live with the
identity of the world's most corrupt nation. But to add insult to injury we are
even now being excluded from enjoying the rights of doing legitimate business
online. It is strange that we must have this reputation tacked on us when other
nationals are as well involved in corrupt practices.
I just finished reading an article on the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
and how he diverted aid funds to private bank accounts. The world looked the
other way as he perpetrated his crime and nothing was said about it until after
his death. The same goes for so many other countries but Nigeria has to bear the
shame of it all (even when it is discovered that certain U.S and other foreign
multinationals based in Nigeria are in collaboration with political leaders to
carry out these nefarious activities to the detriment of our nation's economy
and the suffering masses).
For those of us who engage in online business; since we cannot be otherwise
employed; the agony encountered in online payment solutions has led us to devise
alternative means of getting paid for services rendered. We don't have any other
means of livelihood as there is still widespread unemployment in cities as well
as rural areas. Save for menial jobs and subsistence farming by the less
privileged, 90% of those who have university education are still roaming the
streets in search of opportunities. A few of them have some form of
self-employment while the rest of us try to engage in internet marketing as a
means of making it in this very hostile environment.
I am hereby imploring the international community to stop this propaganda which
will eventually kill what little hope we have to do business online. Nigerians
are already suffering as it is; being poor and all. So save our souls and see
the future of the world (or what's left of it) in our eyes for that's what we
are: THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD!!!
